The History of King Cake in Portugal
Origin and Tradition
The Bolo Rei (King Cake) is one of the most iconic sweets of the Christmas season in Portugal. Its origin dates back to the 19th century, inspired by the French galette des rois, but adapted to Portuguese taste with colorful candied fruits and dried fruits.
Symbolism
Traditionally, the Bolo Rei contains a dried fava bean and a small gift inside. Whoever finds the gift will have good luck in the following year, while whoever finds the fava bean has the "duty" to pay for next year's Bolo Rei – a fun tradition that brings families and friends together.
